What is Ham Radio?

Ham radio is a hobby about using the fundamentals of radio physics and electronics to communicate vast distances while shying away from infrastructure like the internet. For some, it is about emergency communication when the power grid is unavailable. For others, it’s about beeping out morse code with your buddies. For everyone, it’s about using technology to serve your community.

Why the club?

We started the Tinker AFB Amateur Radio Club for fun, just a couple Airmen who have a hobby outside of their career.

Tinker AFB is home to the E-3 Sentry AWACS, a platform that relies heavily on radio communications to do its job. In our training, we encountered many enlisted and officers who serve on AWACS that have at least some interest in how radio works, we felt that the establishment of a club on base may allow interested individuals to be exposed to the invisible but quite popular world of radio.

Who are we?

The club was founded in August of 2022 by then Amn Covarrubias (KT4MNT) and A1C Kline (W9ZK). We host meetings every month in the RE building next to the base chapel. The meetings are a time to build comradery and discuss topics of interest to the Amateur Radio community, as well as spending actual time on the air.

We welcome all individuals who are interested in radio. Ham radio operators, GMRS radio operators, CB radio operators, short wave listeners, or even just walkie talkie enthusiasts. You can be an officer, enlisted, or civilian. You just need to be able to get on base!

Meetings

We hold monthly meetings at 5 PM local on the first Thursday of every month @ the Religious Education building behind the Tinker AFB chapel (bldg 5715). Meetings consist of presentations in the interest of amateur radio and other club business.
